There is no medication for cataract. The only solution is surgery, in which the lens of the eye is replaced by a new artificial lens.
This important surgery is performed for a maximum of 20 to 30 minutes. And the life of a cataract victim changes positively with an operation performed in such a short time. Cataract disease, which forms as a curtain in the lens of the eye and prevents vision by constantly increasing the thickness of this curtain as time passes, causes completely permanent blindness if left untreated and can never be treated again.
For treated patients, there is no possibility of a new cataract in the same eye. In addition to advanced age, this disease is common for reasons such as malnutrition, prolonged exposure to severe light, and eye injuries.
This disease which is only seen rarely in developed countires, occurs widely in places with a lack of socio-economic infrastructure such as Africa. Moreover millions of people lose their eyesight due to the fact that they cannot afford a surgery. This leads them to live with an uncurable blindness thus being dependent on others. Cataract, which is mostly found in one eye of the patient, can also be in both eyes.
